1-2 Cape Town Minstrel Carnival
As quintessentially Capetonian as Table Mountain, the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival kicks off the New Year with multi-coloured flashes of neon satin and infectious banjo beats. The tradition of the Mother City's Cape Malay community donning painted faces, parasols and cheese-cutter hats, bails back centuries to the time when slaves were given their one free day of the year.
9 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate
Taking an imperial bow to her highness QE Il, this classy contest sees a string of thoroughbred fillies kicking up dust on the Kenilworth Racecourse.

3&4 Cape Town International Jazz Festival
If you're into sax spirals, back beats, righteous riffs and all that jazz, you'll feel well at home at this international music festival. Boasting nimble-fingered virtuosos from here and abroad, the streets of Cape Town are cast in absolute pandemonium as legions of fans trek to the CTICC to see the likes of Hugh Masekela and Mos Def.
3 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon
Easter weekend in Cape Town can either be spent scoffing down hot cross buns and chocolate bunnies, or sweating out the 56km circular route of this ultra-marathon. The gruelling slog commences in Newlands and makes its way through the spectacularly pretty southern peninsula before concluding again at the UCT campus. Fortunately for the less fit, there's also a much more manageable 21 km half-marathon.
24-27 SA Cheese Festival, Franschhoek
Cheese devotees adore this annual party dedicated to the country's top fromages. There are top cheeses from boutique cheeseries and big-wig producers alike, and for a further foodie thrill there are live cooking demos by local gourmand celebs. It's the ideal spot to spend the day as there are also loads of restaurants and wine stalls selling yummy food and drink to enjoy on outside tables.
6-9 Cape Times V&A Waterfront Wine Affair
Taste your way through the Winelands without clocking up the kilometres. Situated in a grand marquee at the V&A Waterfront are myriad stands showcasing the Western Cape's top tipples - from established estates to new boutique wineries. There are also ample gourmet stands dotted about providing stomach-lining sustenance.
14-16 The Franschhoek Literary Festival
Make the miserable weather work for you and stock up on some award-winning reads at this uber-popular biblio fest. Rub shoulders with 1ocal and international literati like Max du Preez, Andre P. Brink, Justin Cartwright and Vikas Swarup at the intimate, interactive discussions, and see live music and theatre productions too.
13-16 Good Food & Wine Show
A gastronomic showstopper if ever there was one, this foodie fiesta bombards the taste buds with a legion of food, wine and restaurant stalls proffering their wares. Sample your way through the stands, making intermittent pit stops at anyone of the nine demo kitchens where you'll be able to witness the who's who of the local and international culinary industry cooking up a storm. If you weren't a foodie to start with, this festival will have you converted and discussing the merits of organic fare faster than you can say 'gourmet'.
3-6 Wacky Wine Weekend, Robertson
Go crazy at 55 wine estates in the Robertson Valley - each one drawing the masses with funfilled activities ranging from boules and paintball to tractor trips and boat rides.
11-11 July Soccer World Cup
The 2010 Soccer World Cup knockout rounds plus the quarter and semi final games are played in the brand new Soccer stadium in Green Point, Cape Town
Early July Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival
Hit the road and make your way to the mollusc mainland of Knysna. Apart from all the ocean- fresh oysters you can eat, the festival roster is filled with activities including a Miss Pearl beauty pageant, a swanky admiral's ball, the Argus Rotary Cycle Tour and the popular Knysna Forest Marathon.
Mid July Bastille Day Festival, Franschhoek
Once a year this touristy village gets kitted out in red, white and blue threads and populated by beret-wearing Francophiles. Apart from the wildly popular food and wine marquee, the mood is set with barrel-rolling contests, a French film festival and boules tournaments.
End July Encounters: South African International Documentary Film Festival
There are those that find the painstaking visual documentation of everyday events as dull as dishwater, and then there are the illuminated few that relish in the awkward silences and averted gazes captured on film. If you belong to the latter clan, you'll be in raptures at the chance to purge on award-winning doccies from here and afar.
20-2 Aug Cape Town Book Fair
With over 250 participating exhibitors, you need way more than three days to peruse the reams of literature showcased at this international book fair. It's all there: Swiss comic books, African fairy tales, Christian Science chronicles and journals from Dar es Salaam. As an added bonus, the schedule is jam packed with speakers from the local and international publishing industry.

Early Sep Nando's Cape Town Comedy Festival
The annual Nando's Cape Town Comedy Festival is the largest and most credible comedy project on the African Continent. It is considered to be amongst the top 5 comedy events in the world.
So, what do South Africans, Americans and the British have in common? They'll all bear the brunt of some funny guy's wit during this international laughathon. The risque humour is safely cordoned off in the Danger Zone, whilst the family-friendly gags are featured in the main arena.
Mid Sep The Crazy Store Table Mountain Challenge
The zany shop responsible for selling you everything from clothes pegs to battery- operated ostriches on the cheap-cheap, also has a much more serious side. Well, sort of. They sponsor this 35km scramble along Table Mountain's fynbos-bedecked highways and by-ways - no joke for serious runners flying up those steep slopes.
21st to 25th Sep International Air Show - AFRICA AEROSPACE AND DEFENCE 2010
Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) is a premier event on the international aviation and defence calendar. As a showcase for civil and military aviation, maritime and land-based defence technologies, AAD is the largest exhibition of its kind in Africa to be held at the Ysterplaat Airforce Base in Cape Town.
Late Oct - Out In Africa SA Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Featuring compassionate, charming and sometimes downright controversial flicks of the uncloseted variety, this fuchsia film fest is a yearly highlight on Cape Town's social calendar. Movies hail from far-flung destinations, including Israel, Argentina, Australia and France, and some of the filmmakers and directors grace the audiences with their presence. This festival is a must for anyone with an open mind.
Late Oct Cape Town International Kite Festival
Let's go fly a kite ... Grab the famdamily for a day of seaside fun, when the skies will be swarming with all manner of colourful airborne creations. Local and international pros will be pulling out all the stops with their show-kites that take on the guises of everything from Disney characters to evil-looking octopi, whilst the young 'uns will get the chance to make their very own high flyers. Seriously good clean fun.
Late Oct Township Wine Festival
If you love trying new tipples but have tired of attending snooty wine fests, this refreshingly unpretentious wine fest is just what the viticulturalist ordered. Hosted in the vibrant township Khayelitsha, veteran winemakers and newly established black-owned brands join forces, bringing visitors a lekker laid-back bacchanal.
Early Nov The FNB Whisky Live Festival
Wet your whistle with a glass or ten of the gold stuff at the largest whisky festival in the world. There are over 180 top tipples up for the quaffing from established Scottish and Irish master blenders as well as independent spirit stokers from Japan and Wales.
Early Nov Discovery Cape Times Big Walk
Give your tootsies a workout with this well-known walkathon. There are eight courses to choose from, ranging from a leisurely 5km in Newlands up to a more exerting 80km amble along the southern peninsula.
Early Nov Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts to end April A fantastic way to spend Sunday afternoons in the botanical gardens with that very special feel to the concert mainly as a result of the breathtaking setting! The atmosphere is warm, friendly and relaxed and concert goers pack their picnic baskets and enjoy the concert with friends and family on the Kirstenbosch slopes.
Early Dec Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival
Taste your way through an array of top-class tipples - ranging from home-grown Cap Classiques to the real deal. This festival is one of the most stylish around, and you'll have oysters aplenty to wash all the bubbly down.
